Titian

TITIAN

By Trinity

Titian was the greatest painter of the 16th century. The first to have mainly international clientele. During his long career he experimented with many different styles of painting.

Titian was Born in Pieve dleadore, a small Town at the foot of the Dolomites on the Venetian side of the alp.

Paintings Titian painted: Flora, The Three Ages of Men, Pieta, Danae. His most famous one was the Rape of Europa.

In 1511 Titian painted his celebrated frrcoes in the Seudla del Santo in Padua. His style had now reached maturity marked by fullness of forms. I thank it is cool that he made his own style of painting.

Early in 1516 Titian started his professional relationship with Alfonso I d'esta Duke of Ferrara and spent time in Alfonso Castle. In 1516 Titian began work on his first major commission for a church called Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice.

The 1520s were hugely significant for Titian. In 1525 he married Cecilia who Tragically Died in 1530.

The last Phase of Titian life coincided with a radical revision of his own style and painting technique.

Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali

By Jade

Do you know who the greatest boxer of all time is? His name is Muhammad Ali. He was born January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. The full name given to him at birth was Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr.

Muhammad Ali was a Muslim, which is why he changed his name. I think that’s weird because most people don't change their name. He was married four times and had nine children.

Muhammad Ali won a gold medal at the 1960 summer Olympics. I think that’s really cool that he won a gold medal. "Muhammad Ali won the heavyweight boxing championship in 1964 against Sonny Liston. However, later in 1964 he was stripped of the world boxing association title due to a contract dispute."

Ali recorded spoken word albums, a "rhythm and blues" song and had two Grammy nominations. That’s awesome that he made music that’s cool!

The rumble in the jungle Ali defeated Foreman, who was undefeated at that point. It's considered one of the greatest sporting events of the 20th century.

He was the first person in history to win the heavyweight champion title three times. "On April 28, 1967 he refused to be inducted into the U.S. Army and was immediately stripped of his heavy weight title."

Muhammad Ali went in the hospital with a urinary tract infection before he turned 73. He died June 3, 2016 in Arizona I wish he didn't die, I wish I could have met him.

Helen Keller

Helen Keller

By Rebecca

"And my accomplishments treated simply as illustrations of how much more others can do if they only use their five senses with thought and perseverance." Today I will teach you a little bit about myself . I will first tell you about my Family. My dear parents were Kate Adams Keller and Arthur Keller. Not long had passed before I met my sister Mildred. I also have three brothers. William Simpson Keller, Phillip Keller, and James Keller. I was a successful, challenger, dreamer, bold, self confident, And a determined women. During my life I discovered life was more than just sound and color, I touched the world. I became one of the most popular americans because I never let my eyes and ears keep me from having a wonderful life. For someone who was blind I sure could see a lot. I am Helen Keller.

To begin with for my 10+ cards my first topic was Life. Helen Keller's life lasted 87 years/ She was Born on June 27th 1880 - June 1st 1968. This card is important because it tells you about Helen Keller's life span. Helen Keller spent her life fighting in many women suffrage moments, and the right to an education no matter our abilities. This is important because it shows you Helen Keller was a challenger and a dreamer. As a young toddler Helen Keller got Brain Fever. Everyone said she wouldn't heal but when she did she was left without sight or hearing. This is important because it tells you how she got what made her a famous example for U.S. Helen Keller was an author, lecturer, and a crusader for the hadicapped. This is important because you know some of her many accomplishments. Helen also was the first Deaf and blind person to receive a BA degree. Throughout Helen Keller life her dearest companions were Anne Sullivan and Polly Thompson. This is important because it tells you who mostly helped Helen with her disability's. As you can see Helen Keller had a very important life.

My second Topic was Friends. Helen Keller was friends with many famous people including, President Roosevelt, Alexander Graham Bell, and Mark Twain. This card is important because It shows that Helen Keller is a very successful women On March 31887 Helen Keller met Anne Sullivan. This is important because it tells when Helen met one of her trusty companions. As you can see some of the proof for showing Helen Keller was a successful women is through her friends.

My third and final topic is about Helen Keller's schooling Helen Keller attended school at Radcliffe. She was the first deaf and blind person in the country to attend and graduate college. This card is Important because it shows you Helen Keller was a challenger. Even though this would be difficult she was determined to graduate. Also Radcliffe was a very successful school. Anne Sullivan taught Helen Keller to communicate by spelling words into her hand. This card is important because it shows even though Helen Keller had disabilities she could communicate. As you can see Helen Keller had a lot of schooling just like any other child. I bet her parent were so proud of her accomplishments.

In conclusion, Helen Keller is Imporatant to U.S. history. And she's an amazing example to us all. I hope you learned a lot about Helen Keller and liked my presentation. Nancy Wake

Nancy Wake: a Beast Within Beauty

I am going to tell you about the most interesting person (in my opinion). Nancy Grace Augusta Wake is one person I will never forget about. She helped end World War 2. She became a spy in the French Resistance.

Nancy Wake was the youngest of all her siblings. Her sisters were Hazel, Ruby, and Gladys Wake. Her brothers were Charles, and Stanly Wake. Her parents were Charles and Ella Wake. My point is, she was not an only child.

For now, let's just get to Nancy. She was a young lady with long brown hair. She got past a lot of her enemies because she had such stunning beauty. She was born in Wellington, New Zealand, 1913. She had a pretty normal childhood. Nothing big really happened. It is what she did as an adult is what I am going to tell you about.

She witnessed the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi movement "saw roving Nazi gangs randomly beating Jewish men and women in the streets of Vienna. They were beating them for no reason. She wanted to stop that. One day, she found out that one of her aunts had died and left her a lot of money. Out of all her family members, she got all the money. She ran away from home to become a nurse. She was there for about a year. She trained herself to be a journalist. Then she found out that a spot in the French Resistance was open.

She took the job. She became captain of the French Resistance. That is where her story begins. She could not just stand by and let Nazis take over the world. She needed to do something. She took the job so she could do good in the world. She meant to keep that promise. She lead 7,000+

soldiers into battle against 22,000 German soldiers causing 1,400 casualties, suffering only 100 themselves.

On her miraculous journey she met Henri Edmond Fiocca. I do not know his story. She also met John Forward who she left because she had to do a mission. He would not come with her so she just left him. She also earned the name, The White Mouse. She was called The White Mouse because she was so hard to catch! Speaking of hard to catch, she was Gestapo's most wanted. By 1943 she had 5 million dollars on her head. So if somebody killed her, they would have got 5 million dollars! A lot of people wanted to kill her. As I told you before, she had extraordinary beauty. Nancy wake got away from a lot of people because she was so beautiful.

Nancy Wake got a lot of medals and awards. She got George medal, RSA badge in gold, Companion of the order of Australia, presidential medal of freedom and, Croix de guerre. She has just recently died but she lived a pretty long life. She was 98 and died August 8, 2011. She died of old age. 1913-2011. She did what she wanted to do. She saved and helped a lot of people. She was never caught.

Fun Fact: one time, Nancy Wake killed somebody with her bare hands! Another thing she did was parachute down into Nazi occupied France.

Goodbye and have a good rest of your day. I hope you are satisfied with my report on Nancy Wake. I think that she is very important to history. She helped end World War 2.

Some of those fighters were you. I killed one of our Nazi foes with my bare hands. I parachuted down into Nazi occupied France. Nellie Bly

The Awesome News Reporter: Nellie Bly

By: Dylan

Nellie Bly is that person who always stands out. Well I shouldn’t call her Nellie Bly her real name is Elizabeth Cochran. She was always different in everything she did no matter what. She did many great things but her greatest trip was one that will be remembered FOREVER! But let's start with her childhood and work our way up to that.

Nellie was born on may 5th, 1864 so she's definitely not still alive. As she was growing up her mom ALWAYS made her wear a pink dress not boring gray and brown dresses. As she grew up she read a book called "Around The World In 80 days" by Jules Vern. It’s a book about how someone traveled the world in 80 days exact.

As she got older she needed a job. But jobs were hard to find in those days it took her 5 years to find a good job. This guy wrote that girls don’t need jobs in the newspaper. Nellie got really mad. She wrote a letter to the editor and he read it and hired her as a news reporter because of how well it was written. She was one of the first woman news reporter. She was so good at her job that she acted mentally ill to go to Blackwell Island to get a story on how they treated the patients there. One of her most famous quotes is " I have never written a word that did not come from my heart. I never shall."

Now I'll tell you about her very big amazing trip. Do you remember that book she read when she was little. Well she decided that she wanted to beat that record to prove woman could do anything. But if she didn't she lost her job. People thought she wasn't going to do it so they placed bets on her to get money. She traveled by train, ship, and hand car. She traveled to many places like Singapoure where she bought a monkey. She beat the record even with delays. She traveled around the world in 72 days 6 hours and 11 minutes. When she returned home she was congratulated. Nellie Bly is awesome in my opinion.

Malala

Malala

By Aidan

Today let's talk about Malala Yousafzai, a young girl who stood up for her rights to go to school. What do kids in America think about school? Some don't like it because of homework, some complain about going. But in some places girls are lucky to learn. In Pakistan it is sometimes illegal to go to school if you are a woman, just for being a woman than there is Malala.

Malala was born 7/12/1997 Mingora Pakistan. Malala's dad was a principal who had a school for girls [ and boys ]. Malala has 2 brothers Khushal and Atal and has always loved to learn. Malala at the age of 10 ,a group called ''the Taliban'' shut down and bombed a LOT of girls schools because they did not like the idea of girls going to school ,they also banned women from going in public places without a family member and not just any family member a male family member.

The Taliban had made a death threat against her. When Malala was 15 she was coming home on a school bus when the Taliban pulled it over and asked ''Who is Mala-la ?'' and shot her and 2 other girls Kainat and Shazia. Malala was shot in the left part of the forehead and she had to go to a hospital in Peshawar Pakistan and then to Birmingham England. The date she was shot was 10-9-2012. The reason Malala got shot was because Malala spoke publicly spoke about what was going on in Pakistan and the way women were not allowed to go to school and people being flogged and murdered for speaking out against the Taliban and girls as young as 12 being married to men much older than them.

In 2009, Malala started blogging for the BBC [ British Broadcasting Corporation ]. Gul Makai was her cover name, but in December in the same year her identity was revealed by accident. Malala has won many awards including PAKISTAN'S NATIONAl PEACE PRIZE and was nominated for the INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S PEACE PRIZE back in 2011. March 2013, Malala started school in Birmingham and she had a ton of support from around the world. In 2013 for her 16th birthday she presented a speech at the UNITED NATIONS.

I think Malala is a god role model for young girls because she stood up for what she believed in and even won the ''NOBEL PEACE PRIZE '' in 2014 which is given to people who stood up for peace she also won it with Kailash Satyarthi an activist from India who supported children's rights. Malala was the youngest ever to win the ''NOBEL PEACE PRIZE''. Malala has won other awards. One of my favorite quotes from Malala is '' They thought that the bullet would silence us. But they failed... weakness, fear, and hopelessness died. Strength, power, and courage was born.'' Still to this day Malala is a target for the Taliban.

Benjamin Franklin

Ben Franklin
By Quinn
Hello my friends welcome to my presentation on Ben franklin if your wondering why I chose ben then I have an answer I chose ben franklin me and I want to become an inventor when I grow up. I think in my personal opinion Ben Franklin is awesome so I hope you enjoy!!!
Franklin's jobs of disappointment and, extreme hardness
Franklin was born on January 17,1706 in Bostin. witch is kind of cool because January 17 is near martin Luther king day... ok back to the presentation. Ben franklin was a writer a printer a scientist and an inventor a lot of people know more about his inventor job.
He was printer and a writer near his teenage years. And he was an inventor in his old adult years he invented the kite but he didn’t do it for a kids toy. Here ill tell you the story so people thought that thunder was a sign of god being angry but Franklin knew it was electricity so he told everyone about it but no one believed him so he decided to prove it. He created the kite but, before he was done he put two little metal things on the top of the kite and the bottom of the kite the so when the thunder struck the kite it would send a wave of electricity through the kite down the string it would electrocute him witch is really smart... but not at the same time... so he did that and proved that it was just electricity. I just love that story because he almost killed himself to prove that lighting is electricity and then after almost killing himself he creates the lightning rod like in my head imlike how crazy is this guy like that is just awesomely stupid...
Well that’s all I have for today thank you for listening to my presentation.

Annie Oakley

Annie Oakley

By Ruby

Hi my name is Phoebe Ann Moses but you may know me as Annie Oakley, well that’s what my parents called me any way. Did you know that when I was little I did not play with dolls like my two sisters? I followed my dad Jackob when he went hunting and trapping. I was 8 years old when I shot my first animal it was a squirrel off the back yard fence. I helped my family by putting food on the table well mom tried to pay off while my mom tried to pay off the $200 mortgage on the farm houses. I wanted to be in the war but the garment said that Women could not be in the war. They said that I was not strong enough and it was algale.so when I was not in Buffalo Bill Show anymore I was doing shooting demonstration for the army camps. I also raised money for charity by doing shooting performances after I left Buffalo Bill show in 1887. I also have some very cool tricks like I can shoot a apple off my dogs head and I can shot 6 glass balls out of the air with none of them touching the ground I also can shoot off the back of a horse well standing back words. my most famous trick is holding my gun back words with a mire and I shot a hole right through the middle of a playing cards.

Julia Child

The Spy In The Kitchen

By Julia

I'm doing my report on the spy in the kitchen also known as Julia Child. Julia Child is a very interesting lady because she is not just a cook. She was a spy and you probably guessed that from the title. I hope you learn about Julia Child.

One Important Duty

At six feet two inches, Julia Child was an uncommonly tall girl. When WWII broke out, she was determined to join the army but she was rejected for being too tall. The Navy also rejected her for being too tall. But did she give up? Never. Julia Child became a...spy! One of her missions was to solve a highly explosive problem that was killing sharks! There were bombs in the sea! No spy had a clue what to do... no spy except Julia Child. Her solution was in the kitchen. Her first recipes were cakes that smelled like dead sharks and fish and they put those close to the bombs so that the fish and sharks would not go near them.

Her Mid-Life

After she retired she got married and moved to France. After her first taste of French food she fell in love with it. Since she loved French food so much she decided to join Le Cordon Bleu which is a French cooking school. Julia Child is recognized for bringing French food to the American public. She moved to France for her husband Paul's job who she met on a oss mission because he was also in the oss but the job they moved there for was a foreign service. Here is a fun fact: Julia Child's real name is Julia Carolyn McWilliams.

Why is she popular

She wrote award winning cookbooks and won five awards. In 1995, Julia Child established the Julia Child foundation for Gastronomy and Culinary Arts. She had her own baking show called the French Chef.

Books

As I said earlier she wrote award winning cookbooks. Some titles of her books are:

•Mastering the art of French cooking

Gabby Douglas

All Around Gabby!!

Do you like gymnastics? I know I do! My name is Gabrielle Christina Victoria Douglas, though most people call me Gabby Douglas. I was inspired to do gymnastics from my sister. I was 3 when I started doing gymnastics on my own, and I started gymnastics classes when I was 6. Two years later I was in the junior league. After that, I moved to Iowa and trained with coach Laing Chow. After another two years later I was in the Olympics which was amazing because I was the first African American to win the all-around gold medals in the Olympics. I'll tell you my story.
I was born on December 31, 1995, and I am now 22. I have 3 siblings. My two sisters are Joyelle Douglas and Arielle Douglas and my brother Johnathan is Douglas. My mother's name is Natalie Hawkins and my father is Timothy Douglas. I grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia .
My first experience with gymnastics was when I was 3 and I nailed a straight cartwheel using a technique I learned from my older sister, Arielle (former gymnast) .By the age of 4, I had taught myself how to do a perfect one handed cartwheel. With encouragement from my sister my mom allowed me to take gymnastics classes In 2004,two years later, I was named a Virginia state gymnastics champion
When I turned 14, I left my hometown and family, and moved to Iowa to train with coach Laing chow. Travis and Missy Parton volunteered to be my host family in Iowa. I became like a big sister to the Patron's four daughters, one of whom trained with coach chow as well. Then I went straight to the Olympics. I was the first person or the first of a African descent of any nationally in Olympic history to become the individual all-around and team competitions to win multiple gold medals in a single Olympic games.
I have many other projects but here are just a few. In 2012 I released my auto biography Grace,Gold, and Glory: My Leap of Faith. The Gabby Douglas story , a television show about my life ,I published in 2014.
My conclusion is that I think that gymnastics is amazing and that if you want to reach a goal don’t let anyone get in your way and even when it gets hard don’t just give up. "I just want people to know that it took a lot. It took a lot of hard days in the gym and determination ,passion ,and drive. Gold medals are made out of sweat, blood, and tears, and effort in the gym every day and sacrificing a lot."

JK Rowling

JK Rowling

By: Bennet

JK Rowling is an amazing person. This will tell you about her life story, how she wrote many books, had a very sad and interesting background, and will tell you how she became a multi-millionaire in 5 years. So sit down, grab some popcorn and relax.

In July 31, 1965, a baby was born, her name was Joanne Rowling. Joanne's parents met at Kings Cross where Harry Potter gets on the bus to Hogwarts. Anyway skip ahead a few years and here she is in her small house with three children named Jessica, Mackenzie, and David.

Joanne was very poor at this time. She was unemployed, until she picked up a pencil and started writing. When she was on a train she wrote her initial ideas about Harry Potter on a napkin and filled five notebook pages with Q words until she came up with Quidditch. By the time Joanne got back home she started writing. When she was done Joanne went to twelve publishers, until she finally got accepted.

Joanne later changed her name to JK because it was shorter and she liked it more. JK's parents never gave Joanne a middle name so she took her grandmothers name Kathleen, which the K stands for. JK must really like her grandmother.

JK Rowling was later awarded an Order Of The British Empire in 2001. JK also shares the same birthday as Harry Potter, hmm I think she did that on purpose. To this day JK is still writing books, and will be for a very long time.

I think JK is an incredible person she's hardworking, creative, and determined. I hope you think JK Rowling is amazing too. Her story is inspiring and I hope you enjoyed it.

Wyatt Earp

Wyatt Earp

Hi, my name is Wyatt Earp. I was born March 19, 1848. Not much happened when I was only a baby, but my life got a whole lot more interesting, just listen to my story, and trust me. Fast forward about a decade, it was 1861, and I was 13 years old when the Civil war broke out. I wasn't quite old enough to go to war, but what did I care? Unlike you probably, I wanted to fight. My older brothers Virgil and James, and my half-brother Newton had gone to fight in the war. You could probably guess what I did, tried to join them on the battlefield, right? Correct. My family moved a lot in hopes of striking it rich, so one time when we moved I tried to join them in battle. I had gotten a couple miles away before my dad caught me. What would your dad do if he caught you going to war at 13? I think you can be spared of the details of what mine did. Needless to say it wasn't a happy house that night.

Later Virgil and I went back home to Illinois, only to discover our father had moved again to Lamar. Without us. I said he moved a lot, but not without us! I went to Lamar and there became a law officer. My unemployed dad ran for constable, and won! I married in Lamar, and seemed to have a quiet life ahead of me. Then of course my wife died of typhoid, and then I wandered into Native territory, and there was soon a warrant on me for stealing horses. I then fled to the Kansas prairies, and fell in with the bison hunters. I got my education in the buffalo camps. I moved in and out of that profession because it was profitable, and it kept me going.

Then it became obvious to me that buffalo hunting offered a limited future because the number of buffalo was dropping rapidly, so then I turned to the cattle towns. The end of the civil war marked the beginning of industrial revolution. In 1875 I moved to Wichita, Kansas, there I was appointed city policeman. I worked both sides of the law. I was a good policeman, but ran afoul of town politics. I got involved in a fistfight with the opponent of my boss, making the town council oppose my tenure. I then became the owner of a bar but never let liquor touch my lips. I had a crazy love for ice cream, and every day in Tombstone I would stop into the ice cream parlor for a scoop of ice cream.

Now let me tell you about the Earp brothers, and friends. I have 4 brothers, Virgil, James, Morgan, and Warren. I was 33 when I got involved in the gunfight at the O.K. corral. My friend Doc Holliday, my 3 brothers and I defeated the 3 outlaws that were opposing us in less than 30 seconds. Something interesting about me is that both Doc Holliday and my brothers got hit in gunfights that they were a part of, but I never ever got shot in a gunfight I was a part of. One time my gun fell out of my coat and hit the ground, it then shot through my coat, then the ceiling.

Last, but not least, people always said that wherever the Earp brothers went that law and order was established. I guess that was true. After my first wife died I had three more wives before I died, you want to hear how I died? I died of chronic cystitis. Chronic cystitis is a bladder disease. You would think that people threatened me, and you would be right, I was threatened by three outlaws that finally killed my mom Virginia, and my brother Morgan. Those were the same outlaws that we killed in the O.K. corral gunfight. I guess you could say I had an interesting life. I would have to agree. According to my wife my last words were "Suppose, suppose..." No one knows what I was going to say.

"Hi, I just came from the Lamar town constable election, were you there? It was very interesting, and I'm not just saying that because it was my brother Morgan versus my dad Nicholas. My dad ended up winning, although I wanted Morgan to. He's played a bigger role in my life than my dad ever did."

Isadora Duncan

Isadora Duncan; Modern Dancer

Biography By: Téa

I am researching Isadora Duncan who is a Modern Dancer. She is the Mother of Modern Dance. A fun fact is her dancers were called Isadorables. Then when they got older they wanted to change their name to Isadora Duncan's Dancers. I am super excited for you to read my essay on Isadora Duncan.

Isadora was born on May, 27 1877 in San Francisco. Her first memory was of a fire, when she was 2 or 3. The Duncan's father surprised the Duncan's by giving them a mansion in San. Francisco.

Isadora Duncan's father was a banker. Sadly he lost his money very quickly. When Isadora was 5 months old Joseph (Isadora's Dad) went bankrupt. Isadora's dad left them so the cops would about money. The Duncan's father surprised the Duncan's by giving them a mansion in San. Francisco.

She rejected ballet classes almost immediately when she began them. Isadora Duncan agreed to adopt some kids because they wanted to learn how to dance Isadoras's way. When she had to leave them she either left them in a boarding school or with her siblings. She wanted to create her own type of dance. She never extended her leg fully always just a little.

She wanted to take a ride a car she liked so when the car arrived; She threw on her shall and jumped in the car then when the car started to move the shall(which was around her shoulder), got stuck in the tire and got tighter and tighter around her neck after a few seconds she passed away.

Isadora Duncan's life had a few bumps in the road but she is a great person and she had a great life. I think she is amazing because she preserved for what she really wanted to do.

Gabby Douglas

Gabby Douglas: The Amazing Athlete

Biography By: Camille

Did you know that Gabby Douglas was the first African American to win the individual, all-around gold medal in the London Olympics in 2012? She was only sixteen when she did it! Gabby has gotten a lot of shiny awesome gold medals! Her personal life was also was also very interesting!

Gabby's full name is Gabrielle Cristina Victoria Douglas. Her nickname is "The Flying Squirrel." I think that's an AWESOME nickname! A legendary coach named Martha Karoli gave her the nickname. Gabby was born on December 31, 1995 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Gabby's parents are Timothy Douglas and Natalie Hawkins Douglas. Now she's 21. Gabby has three siblings; Arielle, Joyelle, and John. Did you know Gabby started gymnastics when she was only six?

In October 2002, She began training at Gym Strada when her sister, Arielle, convinced her mom to have Gabby take formal gymnastics classes. Her sister quit gymnastics so Gabby could do it because it was too expensive. Gabby was poor in her childhood. Her family almost had to get on food stamps. (Were the government helps pay for your food.) When Gabby was fourteen, she moved to West Des Maines, Iowa to train with Liang Chow. (A LEGENDARY coach.) Her host family was Travis and Missy Parton, who had four other daughters. One of them was a student of Chow. Gabby has said many interesting quotes, too.

Once she said, "I just want people to know it took a lot. It took a lot of hard days in the gym, determination, passion, and drive. Gold metals are made out of sweat, blood, tears, effort in the gym, and sacrificing a lot." She also said, "I'm not ready for a relationship. My boyfriend's name is Jim... Nastics!" Another thing she said is, "When I leave the gym and spend time with my family, I'm just a normal teenager." As you just heard, Gabby has said many interesting quotes.

I think Gabrielle Douglas is an amazing person. She is ambitious and very cheerful! I look up to Gabby. Over all, she is AWESOME!!!

Irena Sendlerowa

Unstoppable!

By, Solveig

Good afternoon, everyone! A lot of very well-known people are here at the Biography Bistro including Ben Franklin, Helen Keller, and Gabby Douglas. My character is not as popular as all of them. But, I did discover MUCH more than meets the eye -- if you count saving 2,500 lives as something.

On February 15, 1910, a baby girl is born. Her name is Irena Krzyzanowska, that's me. When I was a young girl my father, a hard-working doctor, fell ill with typhus, which he had been treating in others. Before my father passed away, he told me, "Irena, if someone drowning, you must jump in and try to save them."

Now, I'm known as Irena Sendlerowa, or in some cases, Irena Sendler. I was married Mieczyslaw Sendlerowa, but, in 1931 (after the war) we got divorced. Soon, I married a fellow activist Stephen Zgrzembski and had two children, a son and daughter.

Now, we are going take a step back into the 1900's

It is a very dark, bad time in World War II. Many of these people around us are too afraid to be upstanders and choose to be bystanders instead. I have not been tricked into that one!

As the Jews are being persecuted by the Nazis in World War II, I am working on helping Jewish families and saving their children by giving them Christian names and having Christian families adopt them. I wrote their real names and their new names on slips of paper, put them in

marmalade jars, and buried them under a big tree in my friend's garden. After the war, I would reunite many children with their families. Sadly many did not.

The Warsaw Ghetto is a part of town built by Adolf Hitler's Nazis, If you don't know. They're herding 500,000 of the Polish Jews behind its walls to await liquidation. That's when I was able to smuggle 2,500 children out (if anyone was caught doing this they would be severely punished or killed, but I managed to escape!)

Sometimes the smaller children would cry when I took them from their families. So to cover up the noise, I trained a dog to bark. I have been able to hide the children in sacks, bags of clothes, boxes -- even in coffins! I saved them all in three months.

And now, I've became pretty famous! A movie and a play were made about me. The movie is titled "The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler," and the play is called "Life in a Jar." The play was written by a group of Kansas schoolgirls (Elizabeth Cambers, Megan Stewart, Sabrina Coons, and Janice Underwood), along with their teacher Norman Conard.

I lived a very fulfilled life that I hope will never be forgotten. Are you all ready to continue fighting for this cause?

Thank you all so much for listening, I hope you learned something new! Enjoy the Biography Bistro! If you would like to learn more here are my sources:

I have had a big part in helping out in Warsaw, I actually have just arrived from helping an adorable young lady find her way back home. Now, I have done this many, many times considering I have saved 2,500 from the Ghetto. I am so very excited you are all interested in this cause as well and I can see you all doing fabulous things about it in the near future!"

Lis Hartel

Lis Hartel: Horse hero

By Icelynn

Do you know who recovered from polio? Also was riding in the Olympics paralyzed from the knee down?! ALSO was the first woman to ride in the Olympics? Well I'll tell you... Lis Hartel is that woman and I'm going to tell you about her. Lis Hartel was born on March 14 1921 in Herlap Denmark. She was just a normal horse loving girl who grew up riding alongside her sister and under her mother's watchful eye. She began in dressage (fancy horse competing) her first and last love but as a teenager also competed in show jumping. (A competition where they go over jumps.) She married at 20 to a fellow horse lover and was pregnant with her second child at 23, when tragedy struck in the insidious form of polio....

Initially she was almost entirely paralyzed but with the help of her mother and husband she decided to immediately begin her rehabilitation process to ride again! After delivering a healthy baby she started learning to lift her arms again, learned to crawl, and finally walk with the help of arm crutches.

Determined to get back to competive dressage riding, Lis decided to pick up where she left of and rebliitated on her Olympic prospect and longtime family mare jubilee, a throurbred oldberg cross. She suffered several dramatic falls even at the walk and trot![ the walk and trot are slow moving gaits for a horse] as she learned to balance and cue with little or no muscle control. Only three years after her initial sickness Lis competed at the Scandinavian riding champion ships in 1974 and finished in second place, at the time no one on the international scene was aware of Lis's condition and it was jubilee's first foreign test.

While her scores would have qualified her to compete in the Olympics it was not the disability nor the skill that prevented her from competing but woman were still not allowed it would be another four years before the gender bar was lifted and Lis would represent the Denmark in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

While Lis was not able to mount and dismount jubilee without the aid of her husband she managed to clinch the Olympic silver medal the first woman to ever do so and in the first year woman were allowed, in one of the sports finest hours the gold medal winner Henry saint Cyr of Sweden carried Lis from her horse to the Olympic podium and it was said to be one of the most emotional moments in Olympic history.

Lis passed away in 2009 at the age of 87 after 75 years of riding and coaching Lis fought innumerable odds to ride again and to create new Olympics and truly it is stories like hers that make the Olympics an insatiable. element of our collective humane experience. I think Lis is an excellent horse rider and a horse hero to all horseback riding woman.
