Andree Peel

Agent Rose

By Julia

Andree Peel was a French lady who owned a beauty salon when the Nazis invaded. During the war, she had a really hard time. She was captured, beaten, almost killed... But we'll get more into that later. Now let the story begin...

First of all, before the war, she lived a nice life. She was born into a religious family. She was born on February 3, 1905. When she was an adult, she owned a beauty salon. When the Nazis invaded, she joined the French resistance. She started out in the resistance distributing leaflets. She became the organization's clandestine. Later, she was promoted to command a Breton Sub-Section. Her codenames were Agent X and Agent Rose.

Second, she was captured! She was taken to Avenue Foch and was tortured, which included: Simulated Drowning, Severe Beatings in the Throat, and Electric Shock Torture. Oh, and don't think it gets nice after that. In 1944, she arrived at Ravensbruck Concentration camp. After that she was taken to Buchenwald concentration camp, where she survived meningitis. She (along with all of the other captured French resistance fighters) were about to be put to death by a firing squad, when the US Army swooped in and saved them.

Last, After the war, she went home to Brest to find her brother and father dead. She moved to Paris and owned a restaurant called the La Caravelle. Later, she married John Peel. Oh! If you're wondering how they met... Oh you are! Well, let me tell you. They met at her restaurant. Although he was 20 years younger than her, she considered him the love of her life. They got married but had no children. They moved to the village of Long Ashton where they were happy.

When she was interviewed many years later, she said, " I was born with courage. I did not allow cruel people to find in me a person they could torture. I saved 102 pilots before I was arrested, interrogated, and tortured. I suffer still from that. I still have the pain... At that time we were all putting our lives in danger, but we did it because we were fighting for freedom. It was a terrible time but looking back, I am so glad of what I did and I'm glad to have helped defend the freedom of the future generations." She received five awards: The King's Commendation, Medal of Freedom, Croix de Guerre, Legion d'honneur, and was upgraded to Chevalier of the Legion.

So... In the beginning when I said she had a hard time, now do you know what I meant... but it turns out good in the end...right! She inspired me to not believe or do something just because someone tells me to. If you want to learn more about her, she has a book called Miracles do Happen, and a movie called Rose: A Portrait of a French Resistance Fighter. Thank You.

"Hi, are you the person I'm looking for? (Yes) Good! I have the leaflets. I need to distribute them. But before I go, I need to make sure you are the person I'm looking for. (No) Oh well... then I'm sorry for bothering you. (Whisper) Good cover. Now that I know you're the person I'm looking for, do you have any questions?"

Catherine the Great

By: Icelynn

Did you know that when Catherine the great died they said she must have fallen off the toilet? Now don't worry she did not die because of that she died because of old age. She was a very great person [ as said in her name] with an extremely funny background. I am very excited to tell you about her.

When Catherine the great was born on May 2nd, 1729 she was given the name Sophia Augusta Federica. She was born a German princess even though she became the empress of Russia. When she was born her mother was disappointed because her mother wanted a boy. So, she was not treated very well because her mother thought that only a male heir was suitable to continue the family line and keep ruling their "domain".

When Catherine was old enough to get married her mother Johana decided that if she married a rich man her mother would finally get what she wanted so she was going to make her get married, but Catherine did not want to get married she had pride, strength, and an attitude. So, her mother would have to figure out how to abash of these quality's.

Almost as soon as Johana decided to start her quest to find catherine a rich husband catherines little brother who Johana loved the most died of yellow fever. Her mother was devastated but all this event did was make Johana even more determined to find catherine a husband.

One night after another long day of searching for a husband and catherine refusing. Johana and Catharine were having a quite dinner but then a messenger came in and said night mail! The letter was from the empress of Russia elizabeth asking Johana to come to Russia and to bring catherine as well. Johana already new that the empress could have been catherines aunt if she would have married catherines uncle, but she had decided against it. So, Johana saw this as a very good opportunity to find catherine a husband. So that night before they even finished dinner they started o pack and the next Moring they left for Russia.

As soon as they were in Russia the empress greeted her with great joy and that night they dinner with the empress of Russia and Catherine was seated right next to the empress, but her mother was not even seated at the same table as the empress, so she immediately went and complained to the empress, so the empress leads her into an empty room and sat her at a personal table then she shut the door and left. After dinner Catherine changed her name from Sophia to Catherine and took on all the things Russia like the religion, language, and custom. After about six months the empress recruited her to marry her nephew peter the 3rd, catherine and agreed.

There wedding was on august 21st 1745 but soon after their marriage she figured out that she was not happy marrying peter the 3rd for one he would sleep in the same room as catherine so he could play with his toys. So, once they forced him to sleep in the same room and bed as catherine he would wait until she was asleep and then make his servants move his toys around the bed, so he would not have to move. He was very immature but catherine new that she just had to wait until the current empress of Russia died so she could over through her husband and become the empress of Russia. Little did she know that time would come sooner than she thought.

On a very sad day the empress of Russia died, and peter became the new emperor of Russia. soon after she gave birth to her son Paul. But the Russia people found him mean and arrogant, plus Russia lost a lot of territory because he tried to install new military customs. He also was the duke of the enemies of Russia, so he hated Russia which is the worst possible quality a Russia empower can have.

One night while peter was on his vacation catherine told all forces to turn against peter and over throw him. This only worked because no one liked peter so they all were in on it. When peter the 3rd returned he was greeted by an angry mob so he fled to the castle where he was later murdered by one of catherine lover's brothers. 2 months after this she got declared new empress of Russia by a priest.

After she was declared empress of Russia she wanted a new crown that had so many jewels it took two months to create. During her reign many people were envious of catherine but most people liked her. During her reign she also expanded the Russian empire, passed a law that allowed religious freedom, and established the first state funded school for girls.

One very sad day catherine the great died and that sadly ended her reign. But she was one of the longest ruling empresses of Russia, so I'd say she had a long reign.

I hope you enjoyed learning about catherine the great. She is an absoluty awesome person but the one thing that I was not impressed by was that she hired someone to murder her husband so that was not great. But not everyone is perfect, so I still love her!

Mary Seacole

By Elliot

Hello there I am Mary Seacole. Thank you all for contributing to my fundraiser it really helps me. I recognize many faces here. Many of you I helped to nurse in the Crimea. It is very nice of you to attend this. It is just a little storytelling. My first story is about when some hotel patrons tried to compliment me by saying I would be perfect if I just bleached my skin. The truth is I always considered myself special for my lighter black skin tone. "So, I told those hotel patrons exactly what they could do with their bleach." If you didn’t get it from that hint I told them... to drink their bleach. Now let's get on with it!

I was born in 1805, in Kingston, Jamaica. I am the daughter of a free black Jamaican and a Scottish solider. I have two siblings Louisa and Edward. My mom owned the Blundell Hall Hotel. I often helped my mom and played doctor on my doll. I also traced one route on an old map in my bed room from my home in Jamaica to my dream of London. After my childhood I married my husband Edwin Seacole. We had a general store for a while but, then came back to Blundell Hall. "Then a fire raged through Jamaica and destroyed Blundell Hall. Before I could even get on my feet my mother died soon followed by my husband." I was devastated but, I got up on my feet and kept going. Then I opened my own hotel, the British hotel.

Then there was the Crimean war. I decided to go as a nurse, so I asked the army upfront. They said that I should apply to "Florence Nightingale's organized expedition of nurses". I "skipped the formality of mailing a letter and went to the organizers. My interview there was stiff and unwelcoming. They said that they already had enough nurses and left me with the impression that if there was an open spot I wouldn't have been picked. Was it the color of my skin?" I decided that if the army wouldn’t send me and the nurses wouldn’t either than I would send myself! So, there I was, in the Crimea. Nursing the sick and wounded soldiers. They began to call me mother Seacole and they were like my sons. Soon after that I went bankrupt but, in the late years of my life you all started a fund for me and I could do nothing but, smile.

Soon after she died from a stroke in London. On May 14, 1881. Ms. Seacole is a role-model for me. I would never be a nurse but, I look up to her because she spent her whole life fighting racism and sexism. I also admire that she would treat anyone who came to her. "I wish I could say history took as good care of her as her sons did" but, that’s not true. "She was a black woman in an age that looked down on both of those qualities. She would have been a role-model a self-sustaining woman but, soon after her death she was forgotten but, sometimes we can look back on the parts of history we have forgotten and the soldiers that she nursed in the Crimea will never forget her. Thank you mother Seacole! We will never forget you!"

William Wallace

The Warrior of the Saltire

By Jak

Cheerio pippins! This story is about the guardian of Scotland from the Scottish revolution. Do you know his story? No? Well, here it is... First, his sad family life. When he and his brother Malcom the 2nd were wee lads his dad, Malcom the 1st, was killed in a skirmish with the English. His dad died in battle near Eloudoun hill. What happened to his dad fueled his anger at the English and England’s King Edward .

Later in 1297, William Wallace committed his first act of rebellion by gathering an army of over 30 people to burn a town called Lanark governed by the English. During the rebellion he killed William Haselrig, the towns high sheriff, appointed by England. Then, as the Scottish Revolution started, he lead an army on a bridge called Stirling Bridge in Scotland. This battle happened on September 11 , 1297 . A battle the Scotsman won . After this event he was knighted “Guardian of Scotland” and leader of all of it's armies by King John Balliol of Scotland. After many years of war passed he gave his famous speech including the line; “you may take our lives but you will never take our freedom”.

In the year 1298, came the final battle; the Battle of Falkirk. William was a commander and a strategist in that battle. Taking place on the 22nd of July , about 2,000 Scotts were killed. After this battle he abdicated from being guardian of Scotland and passed it on to Robert the Bruce. In 1305 he was executed by Englishmen. Several centuries later a monument was put in place for him holding his sword.

William Wallace had a rough life but he fought back bravely and he died for his country. He is truly “The Warrior of the Saltire” guardian of Scotland and leader of all of its army's.
