Annie Jump Cannon

By: Vireo

Did you know that Annie Jump Cannon was a scientist who invented the stellar star spectra? I bet you did. Today I Will be talking about her life as if it was a timeline story. Now you might be wondering why she decided to be a scientist or how she died. I am going to tell you my story of Annie Jump Cannon. Childhood Annie was born in Dover, Delaware, on December 11, 1863, and was the oldest of three sisters. She studied the stars with her mother using an old astronomy textbook. School Annie studied physics and astronomy at Wellesley College. Annie graduated in 1884 and went back to Delaware. Her Mother died in 1894 and she went to Radcliffe to have access to a telescope. Cannon learned photography. She took photos of the sun's eclipse. Her photos were published at the 1893 world’s fair.Later years In 1940 she published her first copy of the Stelar Spectra which is a unique way to classify stars used by scientists and can be memorized by saying Oh Be A Fine Girl/Guy Kiss Me (O B A F G K M). She retired in 1940 and died shortly after in Cambridge Massachusetts, April 13, 1940, from scarlet fever at the age of 83. And to wrap this up in a nice bow I will explain why I chose Annie Jump Cannon and why she is so amazing, because this is a report on what makes Annie Jump Cannon so amazing. That is why I chose her too because just like I said Annie Jump Cannon is just a great person in real life. Annie was a normal person just like me and you but still accomplished so many amazing things and I hope you learned more about Annie Jump Cannon.

Andrea Ghez

Harper

Today I will be talking about Andrea Ghez. She is an astronomer and is known for many things. She went to many schools and is very smart. First, I will tell you about her job and education, then her Nobel Prize, lastly, her family and life.

Andrea Mia Ghez is an American astrophysicist and professor at the University of Los Angeles, California. Her research focuses on the center of the Milky Way. She studied the birth of stars – particularly binary stars, witch form in pairs. She got her education at the California Institute of Technology, and Massachis Institute of Technology. In 2004, Ghez was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, and in 2019, she was elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

Ghez became the fourth women to be awarded the Nobel Prize in physics. The Nobel Prize was awarded to her for the discovery of super – massive black hole in the center of our galaxy. The Nobel Prize was shared with Roger Penrose, and Reinhard Genzel, for their discoveries relating to black holes.

Andrea was born on June 16th, in New York, 1965. She was raised in Chicago and attended the University of Chicago Lab School. The Apollo programs Moon landings inspired her to be the first female astronaut, and her mother supported her goal. Andrea has two sons, the ages of 10, and 14. Her husband's name is Tom.

I really enjoy Andreas’ interests and discoveries. She is a remarkably interesting lady. Yes, she is still alive, now at age 57. I hope you enjoy her too.
