Florence Nightengale

By: Hazel

Florence Nightingale was born in Italy to an English couple: William Nightingale & Frances Nightingale.

Her parents named her after the city in Italy they were in at the time.

When Florence was getting to be a young woman, she her parents and her one sister traveled all over the world. Each time they would travel to new place Florence would record how many people lived in the city and how many hospitals there were.

When Florence went off on her own, she found herself in turkey in the Crimean war.

Florence decided to be a nurse and fulfill her intense desire to help the sick.

Her parents were really surprised and upset that Florence was going to be a nurse.

She visited the hospitals and studied nursing; she became so good that the government decided to send her off to work in a hospital for injured soldiers in the war.

As soon as she arrived, Florence started collecting information an examining all the data she could find.

She discovered that most of the soldiers died not because of their wounds but of infections found in the hospitals.

“The first requirement in a hospital is that it should do the sick no harm.” she had said.

She made sure that everyone in the hospitals washed their hands often and kept everything clean.

At first nothing was working, then cleaning inspectors came and figured out that the hospital was built on a sewage plant! The patients were not drinking clean water because the water was contaminated!!!!

At night, Florence carried a lamp as she made her rounds, talking to her patients and giving them hope.

Thanks to her many more of the soldiers made it home safely!

Florence was a very big part in getting people to wash their hands and keep good hygiene.

Without Florence Nightingale very little of the soldiers would have survived from the bad conditions in the hospital, and after the war no man or woman would have survived because of the bad water or the unsafe treatment at that hospital.

Florence returned home after the war as the as the nation's heroin!

She was shocked at the conditions of the hospital and began to campaign to improve the quality of military hospitals.

Importantly, she gathered a lot of information about food, death rates, and doctors training in these hospitals.

Why was the Crimean war started?  The Crimean war was a result of Russian pressure on turkey; this threatened British commercial and strategic interests in Middle East and India. France provoked the crisis for prestige purposes, used the war to cement an alliance with Britain and to reassert its military power.

How did the Crimean war end?  The war was ended with the treaty of Paris on March 30, 1856. It made Russia from putting warships into the Black Sea.

2. She was fluent in English, French, German, and Italian!

3. She chose to pursue nursing at a young age!
