Catherine the Great

By:Aven
Catherine the Great was born as Sophie Friederike Auguste Prinzessin von Anhalt-Zerbst. Catherine was a great ruler of Russia. She ruled for over 30 years. Though some Russians disliked her, Catherine kept ruling. As a result of Catherine’s leadership, Russia expanded westward and southward over more than 200,000 square miles.
Catherine was born May 2,1729 (April 21 in the Russian calendar) in Stettin, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia. She married Peter the 3rd at age 16. She became the empress of Russia with Peter in 1762 but Catherine and her allies overthrew Peter later that year. She had 4 children: Paul I of Russia, Aleksey Grigorievich Bobrinsky, Elizabeth Grigoryevna Temkina, and Anna Piotrowna.
Catherine had a very long reign. She ruled Russia for 34 years (1762-1796), longer than any other female in Russian history. She did NOT do much to grant basic civil rights. She had many hobby’s: art, reading, science, and politics.
One of Catherine’s greatest achievements was the building of schools and hospitals. For the schools she promoted the education of women. For the hospitals she encouraged small pox vaccination. She died November 17, 1796.
I think that Catherine was a great ruler of Russia, I mean she is Catherine the Great. Her greatness came from being the empress of Russia for over 30 years and her accomplishments. She also ruled Russia for longer than any other female ruler in Russian history. Not every woman can say that.
