Grace O' Malley

Queen of the Sea

By: Delaney

Grace O' Malley is an Irish queen with not as much recognition as she deserves. She has done many great things and was a hero of the sea. A few of her greater achievements include, using navy fleets to protect Irish wealth, fighting for the Irish and their independence, and making friends with Queen Elizabeth I. Overall, she is a historical icon who fought for what she believed in. So, let me tell you a little bit more.

Where it all began was in her town of Connacht Ireland. She was with her father getting ready to sail with him and he told her that if they met pirates, she had to go below deck. May I remind you she was a woman of her own opinion. When they did meet pirates Grace jumped on to their ship and when she was finished they were able to drive them off.

In that moment she knew that she wanted to sail. A few years later she had her children. Her sons, Tibbot and Owen and her daughter Margret. She also married two Clan leaders (Risdeárd and Dónal) as well as getting some support from her parents (Margret and Eoghan). She also got her most popular nicknames, Granuaile and Gráinne Mhaol.

In some of her many careers including, piracy, being a regional politician, and being a queen, she faced many obstacles. These obstacles are what pushed her to be the best and show her full potential. The obstacles that she faced were, sexism, challenge, and proving to people she could fo a man's work, and that she was not just a dainty woman.

During her career of piracy (which lasted 40 years) she had a good-sized fleet. These ships she inherited from her father. Historians say that she had at least 20 of the most powerful ships in Ireland. With these ships she was loved as well feared by her crew members. Grace is a powerful icon which throughout the rewriting of the history books was lost. She only appeared in the English history books because of her relationship with Queen Elizabeth the I.

In the end Grace O' Malley did come to an end in 1603. She was a strong leader who came from the O' Malley clan. She married powerful local clan leaders and used negotiate whenever possible. She lived a long life and was happy to have done her part in Irish history.

"Hello! After ransacking this ship my crew has a little more respect for me! Being the first women pirate I need to show them I am just as tough as them. As well as being in the piracy industry I am also involved in regional politics. Being a women in Ireland you are expected to wear dresses and just go along with what you are told."

Gliding Through Fame

By Solveig

One of my fondest memories happened before most kids are old enough to remember anything. In fact, at the time, I wasn't even old enough to walk yet, just to ski. I remember getting strapped into my carrier and going for a ride on my mom's back. My parents are the kind of people that don't mind a one-year-old pulling their hair and screaming "FASTER" constantly into an open ear. Little did I know that this first ride would be the start of something huge...

Before I became a famous skier, almost 20 years before I was born, Bill Koch took home the silver medal in the 1976 Winter Olympics, that medal was the first and only in U.S. Olympic cross-country skiing history. It would be the only one for a very long time. I was born in 1991 on August 26 in St. Paul, Minn. Clearly, I wasn't born a winter kid. My family soon moved to Afton, Minn., which is where I grew up. I grew up as your average little kid. I liked pickles, razzberries and playing outside—nothing unusual.

As a kid I participated in dance, soccer, swimming, track, and violin before choosing to pursue skiing most of all. And I'm very glad I did so, because that decision led me to meet many great people and do many great things. One of the people who I met is now my teammate, Kikkan Randall. Kikkan, a five-time Winter Olympian, helped me take home the gold medal this year in the team sprint freestyle! I had the pleasure of working with her for her last Olympics, which was just this year. She was an amazing partner and I'm sure I would never have thrived as much as I did without her.

My first Olympic appearance was in the 2014 Sochi Olympics at the age of 22. My second and most recent appearance was in the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics where I competed in 6 events: The 10 km free, 7.5 km skiathlon, classic sprints, freestyle team sprint, 30 km mass start classic, and the 4x5 km relay. My main glory was in the freestyle team sprint, with Kikkan Randall. We won the gold medal—the first U.S. Olympic XC medal since 1976! Olympic skiing has opened many doors for me and helped me become interested in other things that I never would have known about otherwise.

I am currently an advocate for climate change awareness, along with other Olympic skiers from Team USA. We have found out that many of the 21 Olympic cities are too warm to ever host another games, and we need to stop global warming well we are barely ahead. We need to save winter. I am supporting the Carbon Fee and Dividend Solution, a system that charges people who put carbon into the air and returns revenue to households. I don't simply want to save winter for my sport—sure skiing plays a big part in this—but think of all those kids who will grow up without snow, never knowing what it would be like to have a white Christmas. So, I'm asking you to simply help support this system, but don't do it for me, do it for the kids.

"Hi, everyone! It's so nice to see all the faces of my many fans and supporters after today's race. At the start of the day I never thought I'd end it a medalist, let alone a gold medalist! Growing up in small town Afton, Minnesota I hope I have proven that it doesn't matter where you come from, you can still accomplish your dreams. Thank you all for listening to this interview and to my teammate, Kikkan Randall, for getting me this far. Any questions?"

Mary Anning

Princess of Paleontology

By: Olivia

Did you know that Mary Anning made a total of 5 major discoveries before the age of 30? Though she never received proper credit for it, she lay the groundwork for the entire field of paleontology. She found some of the very first dinosaur fossils.

Little Mary's early life had a big impact on her. Before Mary could walk, the nurse that was holding her was struck by lightning! The nurse was killed but baby Mary survived. Mary was named after an older sister who had burned to death in a fire. When Mary was barely eight, her father slipped down one of the treacherous rocky slopes of Lyme Ridges and though he managed to crawl home that day, the pain wracked him for the rest of his short life. He died three years later.

Major things occur in the middle of Mary's life. Just as a hobby, Mary collected dead creators from the beach and dissected them on her kitchen table. Though self-taught, Mary became an expert who could-and did- argue successfully with the most brilliant scholars of the age. When Mary was twelve, she discovered the first complete skeleton of an Ichthyosaur. She discovered four other major fossil finds including two different species of Plesiosaur, the second Pterodactyl ever (and the first specimen complete enough to confirm that, yes, some of these ancient reptiles could fly), and coprolites (fossilized poop). Mary ran a business and her customers often turned around to claim credit for her discoveries.

Mary had a rough end. The fossil rich beaches of her hometown eventually ran dry. She could find no more fossils. Her mother passed away and finally Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of forty-six. After she died, Mary's church was given a stain-glassed window in her honor, but it was too little too late. She would not be remembered as a Princess of Paleontology, instead a nameless woman who simply sold seashells by the sea shore.

So, Mary Anning may have had a rough beginning and end but in the middle, she made some very major finds. So next time you go to a museum or a rocky beach, think of Mary Anning and her finds.

Mae Jemison

The Story of Jemison

By Camille

Mae C. Jemison is an icon. Did you know she is fluent in four different languages? She can speak Russian, Swahili, Japanese, and of course, English. The funny thing is, she is not even a linguist, she's an astronaut! In fact, she was the very first African-American women to go into space! Mae Jemison is amazing!

It all began is Decatur, Alabama. Mae was born on October 17th, 1956, to Charley and Dorothy Jemison. She had two siblings named Ada and Charles Jemison. When she was young, she said she was going to go to space one day. But before she could do that, she had to go to school.

Jemison went to Morgan Park High School in Chicago, Illinois. Then she went to Stanford University. Her Parents supported her talents a lot. After that, she went to University Medical College. When she went to space, she studied weightlessness and motion sickness on her and the crew. There are many other details about space, though.

First of all, On June 4, 1987, Jemison was admitted into the training program. She flew on September 12, 1992. She went on Endeavor with six other astronauts. She was in space for 190 hours, (8 days). They returned September 20, 1992. Jemison Obtained her M. D. in 1981. When Jemison was a medical doctor, she worked on the Peace Corps for 2 ½ years. She left NASA in March 1993. After NASA, Jemison taught at Dartmouth. She also made the Jemison Group, to seek research.

Mae C. Jemison inspired me by making me feel like I can achieve anything. She said she was going to space one day, and that is exactly what she did. I feel she inspired people to believe in themselves. Mae C. Jemson is an amazing person.

Margaret ('Molly') Brown

The Unsinkable

By: Tea

Margaret Brown is very well know. She was known as Molly Brown, the most and some of her other names were Maggie Brown and Margaret Tobin. A fun fact is they made a Broadway musical on "The Unsinkable Molly Brown". Margaret was most commonly known for being making the survivors committee, which I will talk about later. You will be learning about Margaret Brown's early life, her titanic experience, and just the end of her life.

Here are some facts on when she was born and where she was raised. She was born on July 18, 1867 in Hannibal, Missouri (near the Mississippi river). Her personality is that she doesn't care if she fits in she just loves her dramatic hats. She's a go get it kind of girl. She then moved to Colorado.

Molly had her first child in 1887 and then her next in 1889. Her kids are two years apart. Her titanic experience was a big part in her life. She helped many, many people stay alive She was super awesome because she raised $10,000 and started a survivors committee, elected for chair before even reaching land.

Molly was most known for her social welfare, for women, children, and workers. So, she sadly passed away on October 26, 1932 from a brain tumor. She was age 65 when she passed away which was pretty good for back then.

I feel that Margaret Brown was a wonderful and a go get it girl. When I read about her I want to just go about and do something amazing. Just reading about her make my jaw drop while I'm gasping about her being so amazing. Margaret just exhilarates me!

Andree Peel

Agent Rose

By Julia

Andree Peel was a French lady who owned a beauty salon when the Nazis invaded. During the war, she had a really hard time. She was captured, beaten, almost killed... But we'll get more into that later. Now let the story begin...

First of all, before the war, she lived a nice life. She was born into a religious family. She was born on February 3, 1905. When she was an adult, she owned a beauty salon. When the Nazis invaded, she joined the French resistance. She started out in the resistance distributing leaflets. She became the organization's clandestine. Later, she was promoted to command a Breton Sub-Section. Her codenames were Agent X and Agent Rose.

Second, she was captured! She was taken to Avenue Foch and was tortured, which included: Simulated Drowning, Severe Beatings in the Throat, and Electric Shock Torture. Oh, and don't think it gets nice after that. In 1944, she arrived at Ravensbruck Concentration camp. After that she was taken to Buchenwald concentration camp, where she survived meningitis. She (along with all of the other captured French resistance fighters) were about to be put to death by a firing squad, when the US Army swooped in and saved them.

Last, After the war, she went home to Brest to find her brother and father dead. She moved to Paris and owned a restaurant called the La Caravelle. Later, she married John Peel. Oh! If you're wondering how they met... Oh you are! Well, let me tell you. They met at her restaurant. Although he was 20 years younger than her, she considered him the love of her life. They got married but had no children. They moved to the village of Long Ashton where they were happy.

When she was interviewed many years later, she said, " I was born with courage. I did not allow cruel people to find in me a person they could torture. I saved 102 pilots before I was arrested, interrogated, and tortured. I suffer still from that. I still have the pain... At that time we were all putting our lives in danger, but we did it because we were fighting for freedom. It was a terrible time but looking back, I am so glad of what I did and I'm glad to have helped defend the freedom of the future generations." She received five awards: The King's Commendation, Medal of Freedom, Croix de Guerre, Legion d'honneur, and was upgraded to Chevalier of the Legion.

So... In the beginning when I said she had a hard time, now do you know what I meant... but it turns out good in the end...right! She inspired me to not believe or do something just because someone tells me to. If you want to learn more about her, she has a book called Miracles do Happen, and a movie called Rose: A Portrait of a French Resistance Fighter. Thank You.

Hatshepsut

Hatshepsut, a Pharaoh of Peace

By: Medea

Hatshepsut Ma'at-ka-Ra was the first female Pharaoh of Kemet and did a lot in her life. Her life is still being debated about today. Nobody knows for sure if she really did everything we believe she did.

She was born 1508 B.C. She was not interested in war and cared about the economy and peace. She had many buildings built in her order and in her honor. Hatshepsut means Foremost of Noble Women. Her middle name, Ma'at-ka-Ra means Truth/Order/Balance. She eventually dropped the "t" from her name making it His Majesty, Hatshepsu. She is portrayed as a man in many of her statues, so she was not seen as just a female Pharaoh but as an equal to the other male Pharaohs. She sometimes wears the female regalia.

Now let's talk about her reign. It lasted over twenty years. She also launched a successful voyage to a land called Punt and they brought back gold, ivory, myrrh, and trees.

When she was Pharaoh, there were many buildings that she had built such as the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, also called "Djeser-djeseru" which means, holy of holies. There were five obelisks that she ordered be built and three were built for her eighteenth year as Pharaoh. One of them cracked during construction. It would have been forty-two meters high and weigh nearly 1,100 tons. It would have been the biggest obelisks in Kemet.

She spread rumors that she was her father's successor and he wanted her to become queen before he died. She also said that her father was a god and she was the daughter of a god. She had a child named Nefure who also did a lot in her life. H husband died when she was thirty. She died in 1458 B.C. Her mummified body showed signs of arthritis, cancer, and gum disease.

Hatshepsut was important to history because she discovered many lands and created many monuments. She was also the very first female Pharaoh and it took a very long time for her to go from queen to queen regent and then finally Pharaoh. It was also a very prosperous time when she was ruling Egypt's land. She proved that you can become anything you want to become if you put your mind to it. There is still some question if she even did and of the things that were mentioned in this report about her. We may never know.

St. Patrick

The Slave Boy

By: Quinn

Have you ever heard of St. Patrick, or ever wondered why we celebrate him [St. Patrick's day]. Did you know that he's not actually not from Ireland he is from England if you have more questions read further through, most of your questions will be answered.

and it all starts with a little boy named Patrick. Now Patrick's family was religious and believed in god, but one day he was taken from his family, and captured by pirates. He got thrown on a ship, and off they went to Ireland soon he was sold into slavery separated from family he worked as a pig boy and watched over the sheep he was only feed twice a day and treated poorly. One night he had a dream of god telling him of a ship going back to the British. That morning he packed his stuff and snuck out. He traveled for quite a while, but he knew God was leading him to the right direction. Eventually he found the ship, Patrick trusted god. He talked to the owner of the ship. The owner said ''we only have a few people, so you can join us''. Off they went to England. They sailed quite a while until the captain said ''were out of food hey Patrick if you pray to that god of yours couldn't we get some food''. Patrick prayed. Suddenly they heard snorting in a barrel. They opened the barrel and there was a pig. They had a great meal that night. When they got to England Patrick reunited with his family. That night Patrick had a dream of a messenger. The messenger handed Patrick a letter Patrick opened the letter then and there he heard the voices of Ireland calling. ''help us'', ''teach us your ways", ''were desperate''. Patrick could hear all these whispers coming to him, it was like taking in a whole bunch of knowledge at one. That morning Patrick talked to his parents. He decided to return to Ireland and he built plenty of churches. Later Patrick died in 17,461 and became St. Patrick.

But that's not all St. Patrick did they say that St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the holy trinity there are a couple more legends. Like there once there was a ship a captain, and St. Patrick asked for a ride. The captain said no because St. Patrick had a big stone with the ten commandments. ''The ship would sink'' the captain said. So, St. Patrick grabbed the giant stone chucked it on the water and rode away back to Ireland... that’s it. Here's my last legend even though there are plenty more this is my last. They say there are no snakes in Ireland because St. Patrick grabbed a drum and drummed away. The snakes heard the loud sound and ran away.

Well we meet again and I'm guessing most of your questions were answered, and even if you have herd that story before I bet you learned something new. St. Patrick is important to me because he's one of the first saints that I really learned about also his story really fascinates me he did some really, generous things for example he went back to the people who kept him as a slave to teach the ways of god. I hope you learned something new.

Catherine the Great

By: Icelynn

Did you know that when Catherine the great died they said she must have fallen off the toilet? Now don't worry she did not die because of that she died because of old age. She was a very great person [ as said in her name] with an extremely funny background. I am very excited to tell you about her.

When Catherine the great was born on May 2nd, 1729 she was given the name Sophia Augusta Federica. She was born a German princess even though she became the empress of Russia. When she was born her mother was disappointed because her mother wanted a boy. So, she was not treated very well because her mother thought that only a male heir was suitable to continue the family line and keep ruling their "domain".

When Catherine was old enough to get married her mother Johana decided that if she married a rich man her mother would finally get what she wanted so she was going to make her get married, but Catherine did not want to get married she had pride, strength, and an attitude. So, her mother would have to figure out how to abash of these quality's.

Almost as soon as Johana decided to start her quest to find catherine a rich husband catherines little brother who Johana loved the most died of yellow fever. Her mother was devastated but all this event did was make Johana even more determined to find catherine a husband.

One night after another long day of searching for a husband and catherine refusing. Johana and Catharine were having a quite dinner but then a messenger came in and said night mail! The letter was from the empress of Russia elizabeth asking Johana to come to Russia and to bring catherine as well. Johana already new that the empress could have been catherines aunt if she would have married catherines uncle, but she had decided against it. So, Johana saw this as a very good opportunity to find catherine a husband. So that night before they even finished dinner they started o pack and the next Moring they left for Russia.

As soon as they were in Russia the empress greeted her with great joy and that night they dinner with the empress of Russia and Catherine was seated right next to the empress, but her mother was not even seated at the same table as the empress, so she immediately went and complained to the empress, so the empress leads her into an empty room and sat her at a personal table then she shut the door and left. After dinner Catherine changed her name from Sophia to Catherine and took on all the things Russia like the religion, language, and custom. After about six months the empress recruited her to marry her nephew peter the 3rd, catherine and agreed.

There wedding was on august 21st 1745 but soon after their marriage she figured out that she was not happy marrying peter the 3rd for one he would sleep in the same room as catherine so he could play with his toys. So, once they forced him to sleep in the same room and bed as catherine he would wait until she was asleep and then make his servants move his toys around the bed, so he would not have to move. He was very immature but catherine new that she just had to wait until the current empress of Russia died so she could over through her husband and become the empress of Russia. Little did she know that time would come sooner than she thought.

On a very sad day the empress of Russia died, and peter became the new emperor of Russia. soon after she gave birth to her son Paul. But the Russia people found him mean and arrogant, plus Russia lost a lot of territory because he tried to install new military customs. He also was the duke of the enemies of Russia, so he hated Russia which is the worst possible quality a Russia empower can have.

One night while peter was on his vacation catherine told all forces to turn against peter and over throw him. This only worked because no one liked peter so they all were in on it. When peter the 3rd returned he was greeted by an angry mob so he fled to the castle where he was later murdered by one of catherine lover's brothers. 2 months after this she got declared new empress of Russia by a priest.

After she was declared empress of Russia she wanted a new crown that had so many jewels it took two months to create. During her reign many people were envious of catherine but most people liked her. During her reign she also expanded the Russian empire, passed a law that allowed religious freedom, and established the first state funded school for girls.

One very sad day catherine the great died and that sadly ended her reign. But she was one of the longest ruling empresses of Russia, so I'd say she had a long reign.

I hope you enjoyed learning about catherine the great. She is an absoluty awesome person but the one thing that I was not impressed by was that she hired someone to murder her husband so that was not great. But not everyone is perfect, so I still love her!

Marie Antoinette

By: Bryar

My mother, Marie Theresa, Empress of Austria, had 16 children and she used us all as pawns. She would make us marry her enemies so there would be better trade between the two countries. One of her enemies was France , and that is were I went. I am Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna, soon to be the last Queen of France.

When I was 14, I was forced to go to France and marry King Louis the XVI. But before I got to France I went on an island and people took everything Austrian from me, then made me French by making me wear French clothing and jewelry and wigs. King Louis was afraid of girls, in fact he was shaking when he put the ring on my finger. When I was first the queen it was really hard to get used to not ever being alone. People thought it was okay to come into my bedroom whenever they wanted to because as a queen I was a public figure working for the people. They thought everything I did was their business. My solution to this was to build my own little town near Petit Trianon in Versailles. I enjoyed picking flowers, fishing, and educating my own kids, as well as putting on plays where I could be a normal farm girl or milk maid. Before I had the privacy of my own town, I ballroom danced, gambled, and stayed up late and slept in.

I heard some rumors about some swindlers tricking the Cardinal into buying me a necklace because he was so desperate for me to like him. I already had seen the necklace and decided against buying it, as it was too expensive. He was caught and put on trial for spending the money he didn’t have, but in the end, he didn’t even get in trouble because he came from a popular family, The country still believed I had something to do with the purchase. France hated me so much because I was their Austrian enemy's daughter. They also thought I spent too much money on my own little town, 3 foot high wigs, parties, gambling, and whatnot. And maybe they were right, but my husband also funded the American Revolution against England. That was not cheap I'm guessing! But no matter who had been spending the money in our high courts, our people of France were starving to death. I did not say "let them eat cake" Because of all of these upsets, our people started to protest and were attempting to break into the castle.

Then one night a mob, led by armed women, was finally successful in breaking Into the castle. And I took as secret doorway to my daughter and son's rooms, and then another secret doorway to my husband's, before the mob came Into mine. This is how I got away to start with, but they caught up with me at my husband's room and put us under house arrest in Paris. During this time, they also placed a guillotine in the middle of town, causing some members of the court to die. When my palace was taken over, on September 21, 1792, the monarchy fell and my husband was forced to wear a red cap, a sign of the revolution.

During our house arrest in Paris, with the help of an old friend, we attempted to escape to the Austrian border and meet my brother there, who also had with him, an army. With forty miles left of our 200 mile journey, we were caught and sent to prison at the temple in Paris this time.

While we were in prison we were separated and they even took my 7 year old son away from me. I could hear him singing songs of the revolution, which his jailer made him learn, from his own cell. He was also, sadly, abused, and died later when he was 10. On another occasion, another mob of revolutionists cut off my good friend's head and forced me to kiss her pale lips; in response, I fainted. My husband was not okay with this, and let the mob know. He was eventually put on trial for speaking up for me in this case, along with treason, and was sentenced to the guillotine. I woke up to the church bells signaling his death on January 21, 1793.

A month after my husband's death, I was moved to a different cell, because the jailer wanted to have me in a place that he could charge people money to come see the last queen of France. These people already knew I was to be beheaded, but I did not know this at the time.

I was finally put on trial in October of 1793 and it lasted for 2 days and one night, with 41 witnesses In all. I was tried for being a bad queen, treason, being irresponsible with money, and also for being a bad mother. I was finally found guilty of being a bad mother, but not guilty of any of the other accusations. I was sentenced to death at noon of the same day my trial ended, October 16,1793.

I went back to my jail cell and wrote a letter to my sister-in-law, but before it was sent a barber came in and cut my hair and placed it in a bonnet. They placed my arms behind my back and changed me to plain clothes. I was given a ride in a cart pulled by a donkey, so that the people could see their queen. It took 30,000 guards to keep the mobs from me. As I stepped up to the guillotine, I accidentally stepped on the executioner's foot. I told him "Pardon me sir, it was not on purpose."

I was no help to either of my countries. In fact, when I died my countries were at war. I came to France as Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna, I have received many nicknames such as Atoine, Madame Deficit, Madame Veto, and by many more. But no matter what, I will always be known as the last Queen of France.

Dava Newman

By Ruby

Hello, I'm Dava Newman, I am so glad you all came. If you didn’t know who I am, my name is Dava Newman. You may know me for my spacesuit. I was the main engineer and I tried to base the suit off animal traits and materials such as a shrimp or an armadillo because of their hard shells, so if something happens they would be protected.

The material is based on a spider's web which is strong, but it is the type to the skin but is breathable and flexible so we so the astronaut can move. We tested to see it by doing yoga it was successful it is perfect for space and some more about me I am 54 years old.

I have traveled the world with my husband Guillermo Trotti. It was amazing! We were on a boat on our way back when we ran out of oil, but we got oil in Italy. We were so excited, but we had to use it to make it to the nearest island. We made it there and got more oil in the ship for the boat and made it home.

Now about my family I have a brother father and I have a husband too. They are the loves of my life. They make me so happy. I am so happy to have them in my life.

She inspires me because she is one of the fist spacesuit engineers and because she proves that she can do as much as a man can and maybe even more. If you want to learn more about her you can read her book Aero Space That is all about me thanks thank you for coming have a great day

Did you know that Brighton Zeuner is sponsored by Vans, Bones Wheels, Skeleton, Mfg, and many more. That is another reason I think Brighton is awesome. Let me tell you more Brighton is thirteen years old and Brighton was born on July,4th, 2004 in Encinitas CA. Brighton also has a vert ramp in her backyard that all the pros come and use. Brighton's older brother inspired her to start skateboarding. She started to skateboard at age 4, then at age 8 she decided to skateboard competitively. She got recognized when she joined the OG Betty skateboarding team at age ten. Brighton won the 2015 girls vans combi contest. Brighton just missed the podium in Austin, she got 4th place. At age 11 she was the youngest person ever to get invited to xgames. Brighton is the youngest women ever in xgames history to win gold, she won gold on July 5th, 2017. She won gold in the park skateboarding finals. She won xgames gold the day after her birthday. Brighton inspired me to skate more and don't be afraid to go big.

Mary Seacole

By Elliot

Hello there I am Mary Seacole. Thank you all for contributing to my fundraiser it really helps me. I recognize many faces here. Many of you I helped to nurse in the Crimea. It is very nice of you to attend this. It is just a little storytelling. My first story is about when some hotel patrons tried to compliment me by saying I would be perfect if I just bleached my skin. The truth is I always considered myself special for my lighter black skin tone. "So, I told those hotel patrons exactly what they could do with their bleach." If you didn’t get it from that hint I told them... to drink their bleach. Now let's get on with it!

I was born in 1805, in Kingston, Jamaica. I am the daughter of a free black Jamaican and a Scottish solider. I have two siblings Louisa and Edward. My mom owned the Blundell Hall Hotel. I often helped my mom and played doctor on my doll. I also traced one route on an old map in my bed room from my home in Jamaica to my dream of London. After my childhood I married my husband Edwin Seacole. We had a general store for a while but, then came back to Blundell Hall. "Then a fire raged through Jamaica and destroyed Blundell Hall. Before I could even get on my feet my mother died soon followed by my husband." I was devastated but, I got up on my feet and kept going. Then I opened my own hotel, the British hotel.

Then there was the Crimean war. I decided to go as a nurse, so I asked the army upfront. They said that I should apply to "Florence Nightingale's organized expedition of nurses". I "skipped the formality of mailing a letter and went to the organizers. My interview there was stiff and unwelcoming. They said that they already had enough nurses and left me with the impression that if there was an open spot I wouldn't have been picked. Was it the color of my skin?" I decided that if the army wouldn’t send me and the nurses wouldn’t either than I would send myself! So, there I was, in the Crimea. Nursing the sick and wounded soldiers. They began to call me mother Seacole and they were like my sons. Soon after that I went bankrupt but, in the late years of my life you all started a fund for me and I could do nothing but, smile.

Soon after she died from a stroke in London. On May 14, 1881. Ms. Seacole is a role-model for me. I would never be a nurse but, I look up to her because she spent her whole life fighting racism and sexism. I also admire that she would treat anyone who came to her. "I wish I could say history took as good care of her as her sons did" but, that’s not true. "She was a black woman in an age that looked down on both of those qualities. She would have been a role-model a self-sustaining woman but, soon after her death she was forgotten but, sometimes we can look back on the parts of history we have forgotten and the soldiers that she nursed in the Crimea will never forget her. Thank you mother Seacole! We will never forget you!"

Abraham Lincoln

By: Lincoln

Abe Lincoln is a very interesting man he believed that every person should be treated the same. You might be thinking what that’s not different but that was very rare back then. Some people did not like slavery. but they still did not think of slaves as equal's. that was one of the reasons for the civil war for example one of his general's. made a mistake which might of have coast the entire war. Instead of writing a mean note. he wrote a nice note to him saying how he knew that the general was under a lot of pressure and Abe also said that he couldn't have done any better in his position. and That is just one of the many great things Abe Lincoln did.

When Abe was a kid he was very smart. He lived in a log cabin when he was growing up his mother died when Abe was young from milk poisoning. Even as a child Abe knew that slavery was wrong. Later, on Abe became a lawyer then mayor then president of the united states. Abe being elected for president caused the south to succeed from the union. Abe was the first republican president ever. He was probably the best president in the U.S.

The reason the clival war started is because Abe Lincoln said that the south succeeding was illegal that's and started the civil war. Later, on Lincoln changed the cause of the war to stop slavery. The war lasted 4 years. The war was very bloody.

Abe Lincoln had a wife and three children only the oldest survived. when he was killed he when watching a play when he was shot and killed. He sadly was killed right before the war ended. He was killed by a man named John Both. He lived a good life, but he could have lived longer.

Abe Lincoln was truly a great man. Not only did he stop slavery. but he was just nice to everyone He had lots of respect and bravery. I think that he was the best president ever. He has lots of good attributes I could go on and on about him.

William Wallace

The Warrior of the Saltire

By Jak

Cheerio pippins! This story is about the guardian of Scotland from the Scottish revolution. Do you know his story? No? Well, here it is... First, his sad family life. When he and his brother Malcom the 2nd were wee lads his dad, Malcom the 1st, was killed in a skirmish with the English. His dad died in battle near Eloudoun hill. What happened to his dad fueled his anger at the English and England’s King Edward .

Later in 1297, William Wallace committed his first act of rebellion by gathering an army of over 30 people to burn a town called Lanark governed by the English. During the rebellion he killed William Haselrig, the towns high sheriff, appointed by England. Then, as the Scottish Revolution started, he lead an army on a bridge called Stirling Bridge in Scotland. This battle happened on September 11 , 1297 . A battle the Scotsman won . After this event he was knighted “Guardian of Scotland” and leader of all of it's armies by King John Balliol of Scotland. After many years of war passed he gave his famous speech including the line; “you may take our lives but you will never take our freedom”.

In the year 1298, came the final battle; the Battle of Falkirk. William was a commander and a strategist in that battle. Taking place on the 22nd of July , about 2,000 Scotts were killed. After this battle he abdicated from being guardian of Scotland and passed it on to Robert the Bruce. In 1305 he was executed by Englishmen. Several centuries later a monument was put in place for him holding his sword.

William Wallace had a rough life but he fought back bravely and he died for his country. He is truly “The Warrior of the Saltire” guardian of Scotland and leader of all of its army's.

Jim Thorpe

By Ella

Back when I was a little boy I went from boarding school to boarding school, and it gave me so much potential to keep continuing sports. If anyone told me to stop, I would just ignore them and keep trying.

In my early life, I had a twin brother named Charlie. When we were 9, the flu was going around and it took him with it. After Charlie died, I would just lay in my room and never come out. Everyone told me it was okay, and to come out, so I did, and that's what lead me to the Olympics.

In the Olympics, I did the 200 meter dash, 1,500 meter run, high jump, and long jump. I was very excited, because I was the first Native American to get a gold medal. Funny story, one year, right before I was supposed to run, my shoes got stolen. So, I went to the dumpster and I got 2 different sized shoes, then ran and I got 2 gold medals.

After the Olympics, I married three times and had eight children. First Imarried Iva Miller, we had 4 children, Gail, James F., Charlotte, and Frances. Second, I married Freeda Verona Kirkpatrick we also had 4 children, Phillip, William, Richard and John. Lastly, I married Patricia Gladys Askew, and we had no children. It was a real struggle working for non-athletic jobs. We were broke.

Throughout my many years of life, I learned to never give up and keep reaching for my dreams. Thank you.
