Meriwether Lewis

                         By Maddox

I am going to talk about Meriwether Lewis because I did not know much about this topic.

Now I will tell you about where the adventure starts. On May 1804 14th through 31st. Lewis and Clark started their expedition. Their main boat was the keelboat, it was built in Pittsburgh in 1803!1804, June 1st25th. On a Friday the 1st of June on the corps passed Loose creek in Osage Country. June 25th. Fog keeps them in camp near today's Missouri city for an extra hour. July 1804 1st –31st July 4th the United States is now 28 years old as the corps passes the future site of Atchison, KS. On July 16th Clark, counting his thoughts on this, he calls it Bald Patted Prairie. On Augst 1804 6th Real was a member of the corps that was believed to have deserted the corps, so they sent men to find him. On Augst 24th the day was very rainy and soaked the whole team. The captains hike away and see Spirit Mound. On September 7th now with future South Dakota on both sides of the Missouri and the captains discover a village. On September 19th the modern Big Bend Dam creates Lake Sharpe on the Missouri River, Clark says it is beautiful. Lewis first met Clark after being court-martialed by the Army. Before Lewis and Clark completed their expedition, Americans could just guess what would be on the other side of the Rocky Mountains. On October 8th the morning is cool again. Above today's Rampart Creek, they came to Arikara village on an island. On October 27th the boats move up to Mitutanka, where Clark visits while Lewis and interpreters walk upstream to a village called Mandan's Village. Lewis later served as governor of the upper Louisiana Territory. On 1803 Jefferson appointed Lewis commander of an expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase. The Lewis and Clark expedition spanned 8000 miles (1300Km) and 3 years (1804-1806). Congress rewarded Lewis with double pay and 1600 acres (650 hectares) of public land. The Lewis and Clark expedition suffered its one fatality in August 1804. In 1801, Lewis left the army and accepted an invitation to serve Thomas Jefferson as the secretary. Thomas Jefferson often described the journey to Lewis as a scientific mission to study the land Jefferson bought form France. Lewis had 5 siblings: Reuben Lewis, Jane Lewis, Lucinda Lewis and 2 half-siblings. Family business delayed Lewis from assuming his post until March 1808. Lewis went to Philadelphia to study astronomy, botany, and medicine with some of the brightest scientists and Doctors. Lewis’s Father died while serving in in the Continental Army on 1779. Meriwether Lewis was born on Augst 18th, 1774 near Charlottesville, Va US. And died on October 11, 1809. So, in conclusion I learned a lot. Because I did not know much about Lewis so thank you all for listening.
