Nellie Bly

The Awesome News Reporter: Nellie Bly

By: Dylan

Nellie Bly is that person who always stands out. Well I shouldn’t call her Nellie Bly her real name is Elizabeth Cochran. She was always different in everything she did no matter what. She did many great things but her greatest trip was one that will be remembered FOREVER! But let's start with her childhood and work our way up to that.

Nellie was born on may 5th, 1864 so she's definitely not still alive. As she was growing up her mom ALWAYS made her wear a pink dress not boring gray and brown dresses. As she grew up she read a book called "Around The World In 80 days" by Jules Vern. It’s a book about how someone traveled the world in 80 days exact.

As she got older she needed a job. But jobs were hard to find in those days it took her 5 years to find a good job. This guy wrote that girls don’t need jobs in the newspaper. Nellie got really mad. She wrote a letter to the editor and he read it and hired her as a news reporter because of how well it was written. She was one of the first woman news reporter. She was so good at her job that she acted mentally ill to go to Blackwell Island to get a story on how they treated the patients there. One of her most famous quotes is " I have never written a word that did not come from my heart. I never shall."

Now I'll tell you about her very big amazing trip. Do you remember that book she read when she was little. Well she decided that she wanted to beat that record to prove woman could do anything. But if she didn't she lost her job. People thought she wasn't going to do it so they placed bets on her to get money. She traveled by train, ship, and hand car. She traveled to many places like Singapoure where she bought a monkey. She beat the record even with delays. She traveled around the world in 72 days 6 hours and 11 minutes. When she returned home she was congratulated. Nellie Bly is awesome in my opinion.
